NEW SCHOLARSHIP IN MEMORY OF LOUISE L. ANDERSON - 2003
------------------------------------------------------
The College Woman's Club of Westfield, NJ; annually awards several
scholarships to outstanding high school senior young women from Westfield.
One of the purposes of this organization is to further the higher education
of women; and they have been awarding scholarships since their founding 85
years ago.
I am proud to inform you of a new scholarship that was awarded this year;
in memory of my dear wife, Louise Anderson.
The recipient of the first Louise Larsen Anderson Memorial Scholarship,
this May, was Mun Yin Yeow. Mun Yin is a young woman who not only has
realized her American Dream but exemplifies the characteristic described as
"True Grit"! She arrived in this country from Malaysia only six years ago,
to rejoin her parents. It was in Westfield that with minimal English at
her command, she undertook to succeed academically and that she has, being
elected to the National Honor Society at Westfield High School in her
junior year! Last November, the faculty at WHS designated her "Student of
the Month". She is actively involved with several clubs, of which the
International Club and Art Club are especially close to her heart.
Mun Yin plans to attend Moravian College in Pennsylvania with a goal
--eventually-- of a Master's Degree in English.
Mun Yin was awarded a $2000 Louise Larsen Anderson Memorial Scholarship
and a $2000 College Woman's Club Scholarship.
This scholarship, in memory of Louise, is so fitting for a number of reasons.
Louise spent her career in the field of education. She loved the teaching
profession, she loved working with young people, and she enjoyed her 30
years of teaching in the Westfield school system; most of that time at
Wilson School, in the first grade.
She was very dedicated to her students and her school. I see a no more
fitting tribute to Louise than the awarding of this scholarship in
her memory. When the initial notification of this new scholarship was
distributed to Louise's colleagues and friends; dozens of people responded
with a thoughtful contribution to this scholarship. Despite the short
timeframe between Louise's passing, in early February, and the awarding
of this new scholarship on May 13; there were many considerate people who
made this all happen.
It was a pleasure to meet Mun Yin, and celebrate her scholarship as well
as the other young women, at the Echo Lake Country Club, at a lovely
dinner on May 13, 2003.
